Cartoon Nose Formulas

nose-drawing-formulasCartoon naturalistic noses is almost as complicated as drawing naturalistic optics. Even so cartoon cartoon noses isn't nearly as hard.  You can actually get away with a lot less understanding of actual noses and nevertheless exist able to draw disarming drawing noses.

In this lesson I'll talk nearly general cartoon noses.  Which actually can be just almost any shape.

I'll as well give you a "catch all" olfactory organ base of operations formula that can be adjusted to make just about whatever kind of unproblematic naturalistic looking nose.  Finally, I'll become into Freddy Moore, Bruce Timm and Takahiro Kimura anime nose formulas. We'll run into what makes those type of formulas tick.

General Cartoon Noses

Let'south talk virtually general cartoon noses.  As I stated above, drawing noses tin can be only almost any shape. Simple cartoon noses are tough to mess upwardly.

All yous need is the spirit of experimentation and you can come with all kinds of noses.  The only thing is deciding whether you like what you drew. If yous practise, and so great, you lot've got a olfactory organ.  If you don't then try again and again, and once more, until you get what you lot want.  It'due south up to y'all.

To help yous get started, here are some suggestions:

General Cartoon Nose Examples

Simple Nose Formula

If you want to draw a cartoon nose that looks a fleck more natural, in that location's a formula I stumbled into that has really worked well for me over the years.  Long before I understood cartoon noses, I used this formula to make it seem like I knew what I was doing.

I still apply it to this day, only I now apply much more construction on tiptop of it to achieve the kind of noses I want to draw.  Here's what the nose formula looks like:

nose formula

Beneath I'll explain what the reasoning behind the formula is.  I'k not doing a step by step because, this olfactory organ shape is essentially a modified cube.  If you don't know how to do this nevertheless, you lot need to go dorsum and practice your forms:

nose formula Explanation

  1. The olfactory organ can be cleaved down into a modified box. However, the virtually important addition is to add together a wedge at the lesser, in the shape I drew it above.
  2. This wedge best simplifies the complex surface area of the underside of the nose, which tends to stick out a bit.  It's not completely flat underneath.
  3. Every bit y'all can see in the profile, it also moves dorsum at an angle.  Noses tend to this this and this simplification reinforces it from the start.
  4. As yous can see from all the views, from the tip of the olfactory organ to the back, there's a slight camber down.  In most noses, you can run across it'south underside. The center of the underside is further downward than nostrils.
  5. Although the nose is simplified into a box, the sides are not perpendicular but rather flare out.

This is not absolutely true for all noses everywhere.  There is a lot of variety in noses.  However, this is a good starting point, and y'all can brand adjustments based on the blazon of know you're drawing using this formula.

One time you know how to construct the formula, this is how you lot use it to create noses.  Say yous have this:

How to use the nose formula 01

Information technology's just a thing of selecting a few of the lines to imply the rest of the nose.  You don't want to describe every line.  But enough.  This comes with exercise and trail and error.

You can use quite a fleck of detail, like the cartoon above or y'all can try simplifying even more like the drawing below.

How to use the nose formula 02

You can fifty-fifty leave some of the construction yous used to make a nose equally part of your final look. It makes the nose more graphic and less realistic.

How to use the nose formula 03

I started with this formula because information technology really helped me nigh.  I had tried drawing noses other ways and they never seemed to look right.

From this point on, we'll clarify other noses, formulas, and looks.  I've found, at the very to the lowest degree, that the olfactory organ formula above helps me create the look of the noses I'll be talking about below.  Although the Freddy Moore Nose, has it'due south own formula. So let's get take a wait...

Freddy Moore Nose

Here we are again with Freddy Moore. However, I'm not so sure that his fashion of drawing noses has become universally accustomed in animation as many of this other techniques.

That said, many artists utilize it to neat result.

Alright so, here's the Freddy Moore olfactory organ formula:

freddy-moore-nose-formula-basic-nose

That'southward it? Yup. It's just a modified ball, or egg shape. Simple correct?

In practice, yous can exercise this with it:

freddy-moore-nose-formula-example

And if yous change simply the bridge of the nose, you can vary it upwardly a bit:

freddy-moore-nose-formula-variations

However, the catchy thing about this kind of nose is it's lack of structure. Where exercise you lot but the nostrils? Where's the tip of the nose?

You may want to break upward the structure of this nose just a little to requite you something a bit more solid to guide your final lines with.  Similar this:

The higher up is pretty much a variation of my won olfactory organ formula breakdown. Nonetheless, fifty-fifty without my breakdown, this olfactory organ formula has been used by many artists for years.  It may be more helpful to you than my formula.  Requite is a try.

Hither's two quick turn around of the nose to utilize. This is only two types of the many ways y'all can employ the nose formula. The 1 on the left is heavily based on Disney'south Piddling Mermaid. While the ane on the right is far more cartoony. Don't assume they're the only manner to describe this kind of olfactory organ:

Alright, now yous know what I know about the Freddy Moore nose.  Let'due south examine other types of olfactory organ designs.

Bruce Timm Nose

Male person Bruce Timm Noses vary tremendously. However, there are ii olfactory organ types he seems to turn to most, the "Kirby nose," and a claw olfactory organ.  Some of his hero character'south noses are heavily influenced past Silver Age comic artists like Jack Kirby. I say this but because Bruce Timm himself has mentioned it in an interview he did in Modern Masters Book 3: Bruce Timm.

For the most role, I can say, if you use my nose formula, y'all should be able to produce the variety of olfactory organ types he tends to describe:

bruce-timm-male-noses-sample

Female Bruce Timm noses vary far less.  Most of the time, he uses one type of nose for almost all his women.

This type of nose has some influence from noses drawn by Dan Decarlo, who was arguably the best Archie comics artist, who drew in the "Archie Fashion."  Bruce Timm as well mentions this is the same interview I sited in a higher place.

Here'due south a Bruce Timm female nose. I show you how y'all can use my formula and the Freddy Moore formula as a base for drawing it:

Here's a male and female head plough around. Again, these are just one of many means you tin can approach this style:

Takahiro Kimura Anime Nose

One of the reasons I chose to highlight Takahiro Kimura's anime mode instead of whatsoever other is because I happen to like the way he sometimes draws noses.  He tends to draw men'southward noses in such a way that you can often encounter the formula they're made of.

Meanwhile his women's noses are oftentimes so simple the sometimes he elementary draws the span of the nose leaves it at that...and it works. The Male noses tend to explain themselves pretty well:

takahiro-kimura-anime-male-nose

It'south the female noses that are catchy.  They're so elementary looking that y'all could argue at that place isn't any structure there at all. You'd be one-half right.  I've seen him draw noses that simply don't really piece of work and it's obvious he was just putting a line down. However, in animation, everyone has to be able to take all the characters look the same no matter who draws it.  This means that even simple olfactory organ designs like Takahiro Kimura'southward have to have some construction:

takahiro-kimura-anime-female-nose

That'southward one approach you can have when drawing noses.

Below I created a turnaround you can use for both males and females. Once again, this plough effectually is not a definitive version on drawing in this style, it's but one way to get.:

Video

I while back, I made a video about drawing my favorite olfactory organ drawing formula.  I'yard posting the link below:

That's what I've got to say about noses.  I hope it's helpful.  Time to move on.

Questions?

I can't help y'all if y'all don't enquire.
